It is important to know the difference between natural listings and sponsored listings. Here at Zoom Group we can help you with both. In fact, a carefully balanced mixture of natural listings through “Search Engine Optimisation” (SEO) and sponsored listings through “Pay Per Click” (PPC) is often found to be the best approach, however, every website presents us with a unique marketing proposition and needs to be looked at individually.
Here is a brief description of Search Engine Optimisation and Pay Per Click outlining the fundamental differences between them.
Search engine optimisation – in brief
Search engine optimisation (SEO) is a technique where changes are made to the website in order to comply with the current search engine ranking algorithms, anti-spam and submission guidelines in order to rank highly in the search engine results. These algorithms are often changed and modified by the search engines as they strive to offer the best search results possible, so constant monitoring and management is necessary. This type of marketing suits crawler based search engines where an automated ‘robot’ has been sent out to gather information about each individual website.
The main benefit of SEO is the delivery of ‘free’ but still relevant visitors from the many crawler based search engines – for example: Google, Alta-Vista etc.
Pay Per Click
Pay per click (PPC) marketing is effectively a true ‘online advertising campaign’ where a known cost is set for qualified visitors to the website . The web page will show as a sponsored advert on partner sites. the two major players in this type of marketing are Google and Overture.
Google’s AdWords program allows sponsored listings to be shown on the first page of results usually down the right-hand side, but if your budget is large enough, you can have a listing at the top of the page above the natural listings. in addition to this Google’s paid listings also appear on relevant websites as an ad. Google calls this product AdSense.
Overture is now owned by Yahoo and their listings are shown at the top of Yahoo’s own search results and at the top of their partner search engines results e.g. Alta Vista.
The main benefit of PPC is quantifiable and targeted traffic using a tightly controlled budget and speed of attaining listings.
